The Songs

The Wisconsin Emigrant

About the Song

  • This song expresses the concerns and options of the New England pioneer.
  • After the War of 1812, industrialization in New England advanced and the boldest and most adventurous loaded their wagons, hitched up their oxen and started west toward New York state and beyond.
  • In the West was the promise of virgin fields and rich harvests, but toils, hazards and hardships had to be undergone before they would have prosperity.
  • At home in New England, the soil was poor and stony and labor was hard, but there was security.
