Remember the Alamo

About the Song

    • In 1836, Texas was fighting for its independence from Mexico.
    • Texans hold up in an old Spanish mission known as The Alamo with a mission to delay Santa Anna's Mexican army to give Sam Houston time to build up a revolutionary army.
    • 187 Texans in the Alamo held off 3,000 Mexican troops for almost two weeks until March 6, 1836 when they breached the walls and killed everyone inside, including frontier heroes Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie).
    • Meanwhile, Texas had been proclaimed a republic. Six weeks later Sam Houston told his troops (783 men in Texas army): "The army will cross and we will meet the enemy. Some of us may be killed, must be killed; but, soldiers, remember the Alamo! The Alamo! The Alamo!"
    • Texas went into battle a few minutes later and defeated Santa Anna.
    • This song appeared soon after with words by T.A. Durriage set to the tune of Bruce's Address.
